The Cumberland Building Society appoints Stuart Miller as CEO

The Cumberland Building Society has appointed Stuart Miller (pictured) as its new chief executive officer (CEO), subject to regulatory approval.

Joining from Newcastle Building Society, Miller brings over 38 years’ experience in financial services and will succeed Des Moore in 2026, following eight years of leadership.

Miller, who most recently served as chief commercial officer vows to carry a ‘people first’ ethos into the new era, something that the Cumberland Building Society has prided itself on for 175 years.

He said: “The high street matters, because it’s where communities connect.

“When a branch closes in a rural area it’s not just a financial service that disappears, it’s part of the social fabric.”

“I’m honoured to step into this role and am grateful for the opportunity to work alongside Des during this transition.

“His leadership has shaped The Cumberland’s success, and I look forward to building on that strong foundation as we move forward together.”

He added: “The Cumberland will continue to evolve, embrace new technologies, and adapt to modern challenges.

“But at its core, the commitment remains unchanged, human relationships, community trust, and care for members will always be the heartbeat of what we do.

“We need to provide those human interactions to offer tailored guidance and to put a face to a name.”
