English homes receive a median EPC score of 69 in 2025 – ONS

Energy efficiency in homes across England and Wales saw steady improvement in 2025, according to Office for National Statistics (ONS) data. 

Homes in England had a median energy performance certificate (EPC) score of 69, Band C. 

Homes in Wales had a median score of 68, Band D. 

London, East of England and the South East had a slightly higher median score of 70, Band C.

Yorkshire and The Humber had the lowest score of 68, Band D.

New homes in England increased their median EPC score from 82 in the five years to March 2013 to 84 in the five years to March 2025. 

In Wales, new builds also increased from 81 to 84 over the same period. 

Median scores for Middle-layer Super Output Areas in England ranged from 85, Band B, to 48, Band E. 

In Wales, the range was from 83, Band B, to 46, Band E.

Mid-Suffolk in the East of England had the highest proportion of properties listing a heat pump on their EPC at 10.6%. 

Ceredigion in Wales followed at 9.5%. 

Smaller rural areas typically had lower median EPC scores than urban or large rural areas, though there were exceptions among local authorities.
