Barclays Property Insights found awareness of the legislation among renters has risen from 19% in October, after the Bill passed, to 60% since it came into effect.

Data showed that 27% of homeowners are overpaying on their mortgage, and 20% of those remortgaging are looking to lock in a new rate as soon as possible.

Those with loans put aside £310 per month, compared to £473.70 for those without, leaving a gap of £163.70 every month.

Chain breakdown was the main reason for failed sales or purchases in the last three years, with 22% saying a buyer or seller pulled out.

Gen Z adults were more than twice as likely as the national average to want to buy, at 34% compared to 16%.

The most common support was a lump sum gift from parents at 39%, followed by inheritance at 27%, and loans from family or friends at 13%.

33% of Gen Z buyers, aged 18 to 27, said they bought a ‘forever home’ so they wouldn’t have to move.

The number of renters saving for a deposit dropped to a six-month low at 17% in July, down from 31% in January.

Spending on rent and mortgages rose 4.6% year-on-year in May, but growth is slowing as remortgagers prepare for steep repayment increases, according to Barclays Property Insights.
