Construction output in Great Britain fell 2.0% in the three months to January as private new housing dropped 6.3%, according to ONS data.

Monthly construction output was down 0.5% in December 2025, following a revised fall of 0.8% in November and a revised drop of 1.6% in October.

The index rose sharply from December’s five-and-a-half year low of 40.1 to 46.4 – the highest since June 2025.

Total construction output fell by 1.1% in the three months to November 2025, marking the largest quarterly decline since March 2023.

The index came in at 40.1, up from 39.4 in November, but stayed below the 50.0 mark for the twelfth month running, signalling contraction.

Over the same period, repair and maintenance dropped by 1.0%, while new work grew by 0.1%.

The modest rise was supported by a 0.6% increase in repair and maintenance work, while new work fell by 0.2%.

The industry PMI dropped to 44.1 in October from 46.2 in September, staying below the 50.0 mark for the tenth month in a row.

The rise was driven by a 1.3% increase in repair and maintenance work, offsetting a 0.4% fall in new construction.
