Gove rules out emergency budget

Speculation that there could be an emergency budget to help tackle the ongoing cost of living crisis has been quashed by Levelling Up Secretary Michael Gove.

Following yesterday’s Queen’s speech Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer slammed the Government saying it was “bereft of ideas” and leading the country towards a “stagflation crisis”.

The prime minister, Boris Johnson, replied: “We will continue to use all our ingenuity and compassion for as long as it takes and the chancellor and I will be saying more about this in the days to come.”

This led some to speculate that an emergency budget could be at hand despite a Treasury spokesman immediately ruling one out.

Speaking to Sky News on Wednesday, the levelling up secretary said Johnson’s words were “over-interpreted”.

He added that the Government “will be saying more and doing more to help people”.

Asked whether the PM or Treasury spokesperson were correct, Gove added: “They’re both right and there won’t be an emergency budget.”
